Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The deadline has passed for candidates to submit their petitions to run for the 25th District Congressional seat.
A report issued Friday by the Monroe County Board of Election shows Rochester City Councilman Adam McFadden has joined three other Democrats in the race to fill the position vacated by the death of Louise Slaughter.
New York State Assemblyman Joseph Morelle, former TV reporter Rachel Barnhart and Brighton Town Councilmember Robin Wilt have all had their petitions filed with the board. Morelle is also running on the Working Families party line.
Dr. Jim Maxwell is the only Republican candidate running for the office.
Rochester City School Board president Van White had been collecting signatures to run, but the report issued by the Board of Elections Friday showed he had not filed a petition by the deadline.
Wilt said the shoes Slaughter left are big ones to fill.
"This is about maintaining that strong, progressive woman's voice for the 25th Congressional district," Wilt said. "This is about the people of the 25th Congressional district."
The primary election is scheduled for September, unless Governor Andrew Cuomo calls for a special election. He will need to do so by July 1.
