(WHAM) - This is a Christmas being spent apart for many families.

It is sad and hard - but is also an act of love.

Julia Nunes took that feeling and put it all into a song - a promise - for her parents.

Nunes, who grew up in Fairport, is writing music for a living in California. Her latest song called Promise followed a very tough call with her parents about coming home for Christmas.

"We were scheduled to be together," said Dr. Liz Waller. "Plane tickets were purchased. It just wasn’t to be."

COVID concerns have kept the Nunes family apart for a year.

"It felt sad but the good kind of sad where I felt where I felt really lucky to love my parents that much and to have such a strong bond that I want to see them," Nunes said.

The decision to stay apart for the holidays inspired Nunes to write about that love that keeps her family together even when they are apart.

"What I want most is for my parents to take care of themselves and that’s the chorus of the song," Nunes said

"She said, 'Promise me – you’ll take care of yourself as I will take care of myself' and hey, that’s a really good expression of the Golden Rule," Waller said.

The Nunes family is sharing the song alongside many other families who are unable to share the holiday together.
