(WHAM) - The driver of a tractor trailer is listed in critical condition after a collision involving four tractor trailers Wednesday evening in Stafford, Genesee County.

New York State Police were called around 5:30 p.m. to a section of the New York State Thruway near mile marker 383 on I-90 East for a reported crash.

Troopers said traffic was already backed up due to an unrelated accident when the driver of a Ryder Truck Rental tractor trailer approached the backup. The driver, Christopher Schultz, did not stop and slammed into the back of a tractor trailer in front of him. This caused a chain reaction crash involving two more tractor trailers that collided with one another.

Schultz had serious injuries and was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital. The other 3 drivers were not injured.

New York State DEC officers were brought on scene to clean up 15 gallons of fuel that spilled when Schultz's fuel tank ruptured.

Traffic was diverted at Exit 48A in Pembroke for several hours. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
