ALBANY, N.Y. (WHAM) - Frontier Communications will no longer print and deliver phone books to customers in New York.

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) granted a petition filed back in January for Frontier to stop sending phone books.

According to the order given Thursday, Frontier will supply free listings online and print directories for customers who request them. Frontier must notify each customer and post information on its website instructing customers on how they can obtain a printed directory.

The listings will still be available in book form for customers who request them from Frontier.

Frontier had requested that the PSC allow them to "discontinue the blanket distribution of directories to all customers."

Frontier prints approximately 11 metric tons worth of paper to compile the phone books each year.

Last year, the PSC issued a similar order for Verizon and the distribution of its directories.
