(WHAM) - The next superintendent of the Geneva City School District has been selected by the Geneva City School District Board of Education.

Dr. Patricia Garcia will join the Geneva City School District after a search process involving a school community survey and different groups of people from around the community. Current Superintendent Trina Newton announced last summer that she would be retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, school closures and social distancing had to be taken into account during the interview process.

Dr. Garcia has more than 30 years of educational experience, including instruction from several different states and places outside of the U.S. Most recently, she served as the superintendent of schools for Windham Public Schools in Connecticut.

"I am very humbled and full of joy to be joining a school community that is dedicated to excellence and that places great value in the education and success of all students," Dr. Garcia said in a statement.

Dr. Garcia will begin at Geneva City School District on July 1, 2020.
