Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The Rochester Police Foundation recognized fundraising efforts Tuesday to support the family of fallen Rochester Police Officer Manny Ortiz.

Ortiz died last November after he accidentally shot himself in the leg and crashed his SUV on Empire Boulevard in Penfield. He died from blood loss.

With the help of the Rochester community, the Rochester Police Foundation has been able to raise $50,000 for Ortiz's family.

Nancy Ortiz-Colon, Ortiz's sister said at the news conference Tuesday that she is proud of everyone for turning a tragic situation into an uplifting one.

"He did a lot for the community as well as the family, so to know that's being honored is so helpful to us," Ortiz-Colon said. "It's so positive."

Ortiz's fiancee, Lisa Kehoe, said the response from the public has been incredible.

"Humbling, very humbling," Kehoe said. "And I know that Manny would be so humbled and proud of what this community has done for him... the community has stepped up more than we ever could have imagined."

A two-day fundraising event will be held next week on Wednesday, February 18 and Thursday, February 19 from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. at the Distillery Restaurant's four locations. Proceeds from the event will support the scholarship fund for Ortiz's children.
