(WHAM) - Citing his ability to lead New York City as a mayor, City of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren announced Thursday that she is endorsing Mike Bloomberg for president.
Bloomberg is among eight candidates running for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential race.
“Everyone should understand this election isn’t just about the challenges we face right now. It is about ensuring that my daughter—that all our children—can expect the same rights and even more opportunities than we have now," Warren said in an emailed statement. We can trust Mike Bloomberg to deliver a brighter future and economic equity for all Americans.”
Warren added that she sees Bloomberg as the "only candidate that has the ability to move us forward" through the tenuous time our nation is living through. "As Democrats we must unite and defeat President Trump,” she said.
The billionaire has been criticized this week for his remarks in 2015, defending the practice of stop and frisk from the previous NYC administration. In a statement released Tuesday, Bloomberg noted that by the time he left office, he significantly reduced its use. He said, "I should have done it faster and sooner."
John Calvelli, director of New York State operations for the Bloomberg presidential campaign, called Warren's endorsement an "honor", adding that she is a "trailblazer who has dedicated her career to helping Rochester residents."
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy are among the other New York leaders who have lent their endorsement to Bloomberg's campaign.
