ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHAM) - A package labeled as a dress seemed a bit unusual to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Rochester.
While inspecting freight on October 31, officers set the package aside for additional inspection.
When they opened it, they found 108 “live” Chinese mitten crabs.
Chinese mitten crabs are considered a seasonal delicacy in Asia.
However, the crabs have also been labeled as an invasive species. As a result, they have been prohibited from being imported into the United States.
“Our officers did an excellent job identifying a package that required further review,” said Rochester Port Director Ron Menz.
The mitten crabs were seized and turned over to the New York State DEC.
