(WHAM) - A bill in the New York State Senate would put all rental payments on hold for residential and small business tenants in specific situations.
The bill, sponsored by State Senator Michael Gianaris (D, Queens), was drafted in response to financial hardships being experienced during the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.
Under the bill, tenants who have lost their jobs or were forced to close due to the virus would have their rental payments suspended for 90 days.
Mortgage payments for some people would also be waived for 90 days under the bill.
If passed, the bill would be effective at the date on which the bill became law.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is currently debating the bill as of Thursday.
