Police: Man charged with DWI after stealing car, crashing near Gates Police car

Gates, N.Y. (WHAM) - A man from Rochester was arrested on DWI and stolen vehicle charges after a crash in Gates Tuesday night.

Police were called around 11:45 p.m. for the report of a stolen car on Buffalo Road in Gates.

Officers spotted the car parked with its emergency flashers a short time later. When they approached, police said the driver - later identified as 35-year-old Terrance McGuire - sped away down Buffalo Road. While speeding away, McGuire clipped the back bumper of a Gates Police car, then hit a telephone pole and flipped the stolen car onto its roof, according to police.

McGuire was taken into custody at the scene and was charged with DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, criminal possession of stolen property, fleeing a police officer, and several other traffic violations and infractions.

The officer who was in the patrol car at the time of the crash was not injured.

McGuire was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries and was unable to be booked and processed.
