Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and Rochester Red Wings president and CEO Naomi Silver announced a deal for a lease of Frontier Field on Monday.
The new agreement will be in place for 10 years after it is ratified by the Monroe County Legislature. Under the terms of the agreement, Rochester Community Baseball will provide Monroe County $100,000 in rent each year. This is conditional upon Monroe County making "continuous capital improvements" to Frontier Field that comply with International League standards.
Last week, the International League set a deadline of March 1 for the county and team to agree upon terms of a lease, which has to be approved by the County Legislature. If not, the team would have to play elsewhere.
The lease was previously operated by an LDC, but since Monroe County has begun to eliminate the use of all county LDCs, the county will now directly negotiate with Rochester Community Baseball.
The news was welcomed relief for local fans.
"It's a great thing, because the Red Wings are great for Rochester," said Diane Howe. "They need to stay here."
"It would be really bad if the Red Wings weren't here," said Kyle Arena. "It's good for business that they are going to be around. If they weren't, I couldn't even imagine. I'm just glad they're going to be around still."
County legislators will review the lease in a meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
