River otter dies at Seneca Park Zoo

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Seneca Park Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its otters.

Zoo officials announced Monday that Heather, one of its three North American river otters, died. Heather was 16; the average life expectancy for an otter is approximately 12 years.

Heather was being treated for age-related ailments, including dental disease and degenerative joint disease, according to zoo officials.

The other two otters - Sailor and Sara - are also being monitored for age-related conditions, but appear to be in good health. Both will continue to be on display for the zoo's guests.
