Victor, N.Y. (WHAM) - An elementary school teacher in Victor is inspiring hundreds of colleagues to eat healthy.

Doug Schmidt had a heart attack back in 2008.

At the time, he was 49 years old and weighed 225 lbs. He knew that it was time for a change and swapped out his favorite foods for a plant-based diet.

Within three years of going vegan, Schmidt lost 60 lbs.

"I feel like I am truly in my 20s. I have so much energy," Schmidt said. "Everyone needs that person to lean on, and if I can be that, terrific."

Now Schmidt is leading 1,300 colleagues across 35 school districts in a ten-day "Jump Start Your Health Challenge." His story was featured on Good Morning America Thursday.

Schmidt put together a Facebook support page for those involved.
