(WHAM) - A woman from Ontario, Wayne County is facing federal charges for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of checks from mailboxes, then cashing them at various Wegmans stores.
Federal prosecutors said Jenna Vandemortel, 29, is charged with theft of mail.
In March and April, Vandemortel is accused of stealing outgoing mail from several mailboxes. After stealing the checks and altering some of them, prosecutors say Vandemortel took them to Wegmans stores and cashed them. Investigators have surveillance video of her at the stores.
At least 38 checks were stolen, leading to approximately $2,557.57 taken by Vandemortel, according to prosecutors.
Investigators with the United States Postal Inspection Service worked with New York State Police, and the Wayne and Monroe County Sheriff's Offices.
Vandemortel was arrested and taken to federal court, where she was released on conditions.
If convicted, Vandemortel faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
